Kythera (Cerigo) is situated 12.5 nautical miles from Cape Malea (Laconia), the southern tip of Peloponnese, and is 284 sq.km. in area with a population of 3.092 permanent residents.
Two main ports connect the island with Piraeus, Gytheio, Neapoli, Kalamata and Kasteli (Kisamos - Crete). The port of Ag. Pelagia (northeastern, 26 Km from Chora) that connects Kythera with Gytheio and Neapoli, and the port of Diakofti that connects Kythera with Piraeus, Gytheion, kalamata, Neapoli and Crete (Kastelli). The ports of Kapsali and Avlemonas are used only for fishing boats and yachts! You can go to Kythera by sea with ferryboat from Piraeus, Gytheio, Neapoli, Kalamata and Kastelli or with the flying dolphin from Piraeus. Also you can visit the island by air. The airplane departs from the airport of Athens (one or two flights per day). The airport of Kythera is 18 Km northeast from Chora. Furthermore, you can go to the island by bus. All buses depart from Piraeus (busstation is outside the Popular Theatre), and after a brief stop at Omonia, go to Kythera through Gytheio or Neapoli.
